Sousse is the capital of the Sahel coast — a port city of 270,000 with a 9th-century UNESCO-listed medina, the Ribat fortress, a wide sandy beach strip running 15 km north to the Port El Kantaoui marina, and the country's liveliest nightlife outside Tunis.

  • Two airports nearby: Enfidha (NBE) 50 km north, Monastir (MIR) 25 km south.
  • Medina + Ribat + Great Mosque make a compact UNESCO-listed half-day walk.
  • Port El Kantaoui is the resort marina 10 km north — quieter than Sousse town itself.
  • Sousse has Tunisia's most active beach nightlife (Bouhsina, Boujaafar).
  • May–October for beach; April and November are best for sightseeing.

Overview of Sousse

Sousse — Tunisia's third-largest city — sits halfway down the eastern coast on the Gulf of Hammamet. It's a working port, university town and beach destination rolled into one. The medina, ringed by 9th-century Aghlabid walls, was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1988 for its early Islamic military architecture: the Ribat watchtower, the austere Great Mosque, and a kasbah housing one of the world's great mosaic museums.

From the medina, Boujaafar Beach runs north along the corniche for 15 km up to the Port El Kantaoui marina — a purpose-built 1979 resort centre with a golf course, the Hannibal Park, and a string of 4★ and 5★ all-inclusives (Mövenpick, Hasdrubal, El Mouradi). The Sousse–Kantaoui strip is one of Tunisia's most developed beach corridors.

Sousse also has the busiest nightlife on the Sahel. Bouhsina, the strip just north of the medina, is lined with bars and clubs. The TGM-style Métro du Sahel light-rail makes hopping between Sousse, Monastir, Mahdia and the airport easy and cheap.
