Overview of Djerba

Djerba sits in the Gulf of Gabès off Tunisia's south-east coast and is connected to the mainland by a 7-km Roman causeway and by ferry from Jorf. With 514 km² of palm-and-olive flatland and 125 km of coastline — most of it sand — it has been Tunisia's biggest mass-tourism destination for decades. The island averages over 300 sunny days a year and 23°C, which is why charters from across Europe land here in winter as well as summer.

The hotel zone is the Zone Touristique de Sidi Mahres on the north-east coast: a 20-km strip of beachfront 4★ and 5★ resorts (Hasdrubal Prestige, Iberostar, TUI Blue, Radisson) backing the longest uninterrupted beach in the country. The main town, Houmt Souk, is 10 km west of the zone — a relaxed, low-rise warren of squares (Place Hedi Chaker), funduks (caravanserais turned hotels), and the daily fish auction that gives the local cuisine its identity.

Inland, Djerba has a multi-faith identity that earned it a UNESCO World Heritage inscription in 2023. The village of Erriadh hosts the El Ghriba synagogue, the destination of an annual Jewish pilgrimage. Guellala on the south coast is the historic pottery capital, where green-glazed jars and amphorae have been made for 3,000 years. Around Ajim — the ferry port — are several Star Wars filming locations (Obi-Wan's house, the Mos Eisley exteriors).

Is Djerba good for families?
Yes — flat island, shallow warm sea, dozens of all-inclusive resorts with kids' clubs, and short flight times from Europe. The TUI Blue Palm Beach and Iberostar Mehari are family favourites.
Are there direct flights to Djerba from Europe?
Yes, from most major Western European capitals in summer (April–October), and limited year-round routes from Paris and Frankfurt via Tunisair. Winter charters operate from the UK, Belgium and France.
