Section 04 — Trust

Is it safe to drive in Tunisia?

Yes — and here's exactly what to expect. Honest, no sugar-coating, from people who drive these roads every week.

Police checkpoints

Routine and friendly. Keep passport + rental papers handy, smile, move on.

Road conditions

A1 motorway is excellent. Rural roads are paved but watch for potholes and animals.

Navigation apps

Google Maps & Waze work everywhere. Download offline maps for the south.

Parking

Cheap and easy outside medinas. Use hotel parking or guarded lots in city centres.

Fuel stations

Frequent on motorways and coast. Top up before going south of Tozeur.

Driving at night

Avoid rural roads after dark — unlit, animals, oncoming high-beams.

Visitor tip: if any roadside situation feels off, drive to the nearest tourist police post or hotel — every coastal town has one within minutes.

Section 09 — Answered

Everything travellers ask us

The most-searched questions about getting around Tunisia — answered honestly.

For most international visitors a private driver or rental car gives the best balance of comfort and reach. For budget travel between cities, the SNCFT train (Tunis–Sousse–Sfax) and louages are excellent and very cheap. Domestic flights make sense only for Tunis ↔ Djerba/Tozeur.

Let us plan the moving parts.

Our Smart Trip Planner factors transport into every itinerary — driver days, train tickets and louage hops, all priced and pre-arranged.
