Yellow taxis — how they work
Tunisian yellow taxis are individual cars (max 3 passengers) licensed for travel within a city and its near suburbs. They run on a meter — the only price that matters is the number on the meter when you arrive.
Flag from the kerb anywhere outside the medina. Sit in the back. State your destination clearly. Confirm the meter is on (look for the lit display) — say 'compteur, s'il vous plaît' if it isn't. If the driver refuses to use the meter, get out and find another. There are thousands.
Tariff 1 (daytime, 05:00–21:00): 0.7 TND start, ~0.7 TND/km.
Tariff 2 (night, 21:00–05:00): 50% surcharge — meter shows '2' instead of '1'.
A typical 10-minute hop within Tunis: 5–8 TND (€1.50–€2.50). A 20-minute crosstown ride: 12–18 TND (€3.60–€5.40).
