Taxis & Bolt: the city move

In Tunisian cities, the yellow taxi is everywhere — flag one down, hand over a few dinars, done. Bolt operates in greater Tunis (the only ride-hailing app currently working at scale), and it's the smart pick if you don't speak French or Arabic. Both are cheap. Both have rules. Here's how to use them confidently.

Yellow taxis — how they work

Tunisian yellow taxis are individual cars (max 3 passengers) licensed for travel within a city and its near suburbs. They run on a meter — the only price that matters is the number on the meter when you arrive. Flag from the kerb anywhere outside the medina. Sit in the back. State your destination clearly. Confirm the meter is on (look for the lit display) — say 'compteur, s'il vous plaît' if it isn't. If the driver refuses to use the meter, get out and find another. There are thousands. Tariff 1 (daytime, 05:00–21:00): 0.7 TND start, ~0.7 TND/km. Tariff 2 (night, 21:00–05:00): 50% surcharge — meter shows '2' instead of '1'. A typical 10-minute hop within Tunis: 5–8 TND (€1.50–€2.50). A 20-minute crosstown ride: 12–18 TND (€3.60–€5.40).

Bolt — the easy ride-hailing app option in Tunisia

Bolt — the easy app option

Bolt is the dominant ride-hailing app in Tunisia, working well in greater Tunis (including Carthage, La Marsa, Gammarth, Ariana, Ben Arous). Coverage in Sousse and Hammamet is patchy; in smaller towns it doesn't work at all. Why use it: fixed price shown upfront, GPS routing (no 'wrong route' scams), no language friction, in-app payment with your foreign card. The price is usually within 10% of the metered yellow taxi but with zero stress. Download before you travel and add a card. Pickup time in central Tunis: 3–7 minutes. Pickup at the airport: now permitted, drivers wait in a designated lot, expect to walk 2 minutes. Bolt also offers Bolt Food (food delivery) — useful for late-night hotel orders.

Avoiding overcharges (rare but real)

The vast majority of Tunisian taxi drivers are honest and the meter system protects you. The exceptions: Airport touts: drivers who approach you in arrivals offering a 'fixed price' to your hotel. Always 2–3× the metered fare. Walk past them, exit the building, and either take a metered taxi from the official rank or open Bolt. Night scams (rare): some drivers 'forget' to switch to tariff 2 and charge you tariff 2 by hand-calculation when the meter actually says tariff 1. Watch the meter. 'Broken meter' line: politely refuse and exit. Don't argue. For longer trips (e.g. Tunis → Hammamet, ~70 km), you negotiate a price upfront with the taxi (~80–120 TND one way) or use a louage / private driver — meters don't apply outside city limits.

Tipping and payment

Cash, in Tunisian dinars, is expected for yellow taxis. Carry small notes — drivers rarely have change for a 50 TND. Tipping is not obligatory but rounding up is normal. If the meter says 7.40, hand over 8 TND. For a longer ride, 1–2 TND extra is appreciated. Bolt is in-app card payment by default. The app shows the price upfront so there's no haggling. You can still tip the driver in cash if he was particularly helpful.

Special cases — airports and resorts

Tunis-Carthage airport → city centre: ~10 km, metered ~15–25 TND day, ~25–35 TND night. Bolt: similar. Touts will try €30–€50 — say no. Enfidha airport → Hammamet: ~50 km, no Bolt. Pre-booked transfer (most hotels include it in package deals) or pre-arranged private car (€40–€60). Avoid airport touts; the on-site Hertz/Avis desks can also arrange transfers. Djerba-Zarzis airport → resort zone: 5–15 km, taxi ~10–25 TND. Bolt has limited Djerba coverage — check the app before relying on it. Resort hotels often have their own taxi rank with set tourist prices (a bit higher than street taxis). Reasonable trade-off for convenience.
