Overview of Sidi Bou Said

Sidi Bou Said sits on a cliff above the Gulf of Tunis at the north-east tip of the metropolitan area. The blue-and-white colour palette — codified in 1915 by the French painter and ethnographer Rodolphe d'Erlanger, who lived here — has been protected by municipal decree ever since: every door is cobalt, every wall whitewashed, every window grille wrought-iron.

The village is small. Two main cobblestone streets climb from the lower parking lot to the main square, lined with cafés, jewelry shops, perfume stalls and ice-cream parlours. Café des Nattes at the top — reached by a flight of blue-and-white steps — serves mint tea with pine nuts since 1856. Café Sidi Chabaane below has the famous cliff terrace looking down at the marina of Sidi Bou Said and across to Carthage.

Beyond the cafés, Dar el Annabi and Dar Ennejma Ezzahra (the d'Erlanger palace, now a museum of Arab music) give context to the architecture. The marina of Sidi Bou Said at the bottom of the cliff has fish restaurants and is a 15-minute walk down (or 5 minutes by car).
