Quick answerUpdated Reviewed by eTunisie editors (Tunis)

Monastir is the Sahel city built around the country's most photogenic ribat — an 8th-century fortified monastery used as the set for Monty Python's Life of Brian. It has its own international airport (MIR), the Bourguiba family mausoleum, a relaxed marina, and the Skanes resort strip running north toward Sousse.

  • Monastir–Habib Bourguiba (MIR) is the airport — 8 km from town, with Tunisair and summer charters.
  • Don't miss the ribat (used as Jerusalem in Life of Brian) and the Bourguiba mausoleum.
  • Skanes is the beach-resort strip between Monastir and Sousse — good 4★ value.
  • Sahel Métro connects Monastir to Sousse (30 min) and Mahdia (1 hour).
  • Monastir is the easiest Sahel arrival point if your flight lands at MIR.

Overview of Monastir

Monastir sits 25 km south of Sousse on the Tunisian Sahel coast. It owes much of its identity to Habib Bourguiba — the first president of independent Tunisia, born here in 1903 — whose grand white-and-gold mausoleum dominates the old cemetery. The other landmark is the 8th-century ribat: a fortified Islamic monastery from the early Aghlabid era, kept in spectacular condition, and used in 1979 as the location for Jerusalem in Monty Python's Life of Brian.

The town itself is compact and walkable — medina, ribat, marina, mausoleum and the corniche all within 20 minutes. Outside the centre, the Skanes zone north toward Sousse hosts the beach-resort strip: 4★ all-inclusives, the El Kantaoui-style marina at Cap Marina, and a long shallow beach.

Monastir's main practical asset is its airport — Monastir–Habib Bourguiba International (MIR), 8 km from town, served by Tunisair and summer charters from across Europe. It's the easiest arrival point for Sahel-based trips.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about visiting Monastir

Is Monastir worth visiting?
Yes for the ribat and Bourguiba mausoleum — half a day from a Sousse base, or longer as your own base if you fly into MIR.
What's the difference between Monastir and Sousse?
Monastir is smaller, calmer, more architecturally interesting (ribat + mausoleum). Sousse is bigger, livelier, with the UNESCO medina and more nightlife. They're 30 minutes apart by Sahel Métro.
Is MIR airport convenient?
Yes — small, simple, 8 km from town, and 25 km from Sousse. Many summer charters use MIR rather than NBE.
Was Life of Brian really filmed at the ribat?
Yes. Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979) used the Monastir ribat extensively as Jerusalem — the rooftop crucifixion scene was filmed there.
