  • Mahdia beach runs 20+ km south — undeveloped at the far end.
  • Some of Tunisia's best Mediterranean diving (Mahdia and Salakta wrecks).

Overview of Mahdia

Mahdia is a small Sahel port (population 80,000) set on a narrow rocky peninsula 60 km south of Monastir. It was the original capital of the Fatimid caliphate (founded 921 CE) before the dynasty moved on to Egypt and founded Cairo. The old quarter, entered through the immense Skifa el Kahla gate, sits at the tip of the peninsula with the sea on three sides.

Modern Mahdia spreads inland from the medina, and the beach strip runs 20+ km south past the Zone Touristique — a quieter, less-developed cluster of 4★ resorts (Iberostar Royal El Mansour, Vincci Helios, El Mouradi Cap Mahdia) with one of the longest stretches of pale-sand beach in the Mediterranean.

Mahdia is the easiest Sahel base for a quieter holiday — fewer party hotels than Sousse, lower prices than Hammamet, more local life than Port El Kantaoui. It's also one of Tunisia's best Mediterranean diving bases — visibility 15–25 m, several Roman wrecks off the coast.
