Visa, entry and documentation
Canadian passport holders enter Tunisia without a visa for stays up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry. Bring proof of return travel and accommodation; immigration occasionally asks for both, especially on charter flights to Djerba and Enfidha.
Flying from Canada
There is no direct service between Canada and Tunisia. The two most reliable routings are:
- Montreal YUL → Paris CDG → Tunis on Air France / Tunisair codeshare (≈10 h, daily).
- Toronto YYZ → Istanbul IST → Tunis or Djerba on Turkish Airlines (≈14 h, very competitive fares).
- Toronto YYZ → Frankfurt → Tunis on Lufthansa (≈12 h).
- Winter charters from Montreal to Djerba via Sunwing and Air Transat (seasonal).
Safety status
Global Affairs Canada advises exercising a high degree of caution in Tunisia generally, with avoid-non-essential-travel warnings limited to the Libyan border, the Chaambi mountains, and remote stretches of the south. All the standard tourist circuits — Tunis, Hammamet, Sousse, Djerba, Tozeur — are visited by thousands of Canadians every year, including organised package groups from Sunwing and Transat.
Costs in Canadian dollars
Tunisia delivers four-star Mediterranean holidays at Mexican or Cuban all-inclusive prices, but with vastly more cultural depth. As a rough 2026 benchmark per person per day:
- Backpacker: CAD $65.
- Mid-range hotel + restaurants + car: CAD $130–180.
- Luxury 5★ + private driver: CAD $350–550.
- All-inclusive Djerba beach week (flight + 7 nights): CAD $1,500–2,200 from Montreal.
Best itinerary for Canadians
Most Canadians fly in via Paris for a 10-night trip: 3 nights Tunis, 2 nights Tozeur (desert), 5 nights Djerba beach. Quebec families on charter flights typically do a single week on Djerba or Hammamet all-inclusive — perfectly fine if you don't want to plan but a missed opportunity if you've come 7,000 km.
