One week, three landscapes: 2 nights Tunis (capital + Carthage + Sidi Bou Said), 2 nights in Tozeur (Sahara, oases, Star Wars), 3 nights on the coast (Djerba or Hammamet). Drive yourself or use a private driver — total distance ~1,400 km.

  • Day 1–2: Tunis, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, Bardo Museum.
  • Day 3: Drive Tunis → El Jem → Tozeur (450 km, 5 h with stop).
  • Day 4: Sahara — Chebika, Tamerza, dunes at sunset.
  • Day 5: Tozeur → Djerba (3 h) — beach base.
  • Day 6–7: Djerba — beaches, El Ghriba synagogue, Houmt Souk.

Tunisia is small enough to give you three completely different experiences in a single week without internal flights. This itinerary pairs the cultural depth of Tunis–Carthage with the wow-factor of the Sahara and finishes on the warm beaches of Djerba or Hammamet, leaving you both inspired and rested.

Day 1 — Arrive Tunis, evening in Sidi Bou Said

Land at Tunis–Carthage airport. Check in at a hotel in La Marsa, Gammarth or the medina. Evening: dinner in Sidi Bou Said with a sunset coffee at Café des Délices overlooking the bay.

Day 2 — Medina, Bardo, Carthage

Morning in the UNESCO medina of Tunis: Zitouna Mosque, the souks, Tourbet El Bey. Late morning: Bardo Museum (world's largest collection of Roman mosaics — 2h minimum). Afternoon: Carthage by the TGM light rail — Antonine Baths, Byrsa Hill, Roman amphitheatre. Back to Sidi Bou Said for dinner.

Day 3 — Tunis → El Jem → Tozeur

Long driving day (450 km, 5 h). Stop at El Jem to climb inside the world's third-largest Roman amphitheatre. Continue south through the olive groves to Tozeur, arriving by late afternoon. Check in to a desert-edge hotel like the Anantara Sahara Tozeur Resort or The Mora Sahara.

Day 4 — The Sahara

Full day exploring the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza, the salt lake Chott el Jerid (Star Wars: A New Hope filming location), and the dunes at Ong Jemel for sunset. Sleep again in Tozeur.

Day 5 — Tozeur → Djerba

Drive south-east to Djerba (340 km, 4 h). Cross by the Roman causeway from El Kantara or take the ferry from Jorf. Check in to a beach hotel on Sidi Mahres.

Day 6–7 — Djerba

Two full beach days with one cultural morning: El Ghriba synagogue, Houmt Souk pottery alleys, sunset at the Borj el Kebir fortress. Fly out from Djerba (DJE) to Europe direct, or back to Tunis to connect.

Alternative — swap the beach for Hammamet

If you prefer easier flight logistics, swap Djerba for Hammamet: drive Tozeur → Hammamet (470 km, 5 h), 3 nights at a Hammamet Bay resort, then 1-hour transfer back to Tunis or Enfidha airport.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for Tunisia?
Yes — comfortably covers Tunis, one Roman site (El Jem), the Sahara at Tozeur and 3 nights of beach. 10 days lets you add Kairouan and Sousse.
Should I drive or hire a driver?
Either works. Self-drive is fine on main roads (€30/day for a rental). A private driver costs €120–180/day all-in including fuel and is the easier option for first-time visitors.
Can I do this in winter?
Yes — winter is actually ideal for the Sahara portion. The coast is cool but cultural sites are perfect.
