Where to stay in Tunisia — every region, honestly ranked

Tunisia is small enough to see a lot in a week but varied enough that the wrong base can shape the whole trip. Seven areas take almost all visitors: Hammamet, Sousse, Monastir, Mahdia, Djerba, Tunis and the Sahara gateway at Tozeur. Here is what each is genuinely good at, what it costs and who should book it.

Quick answerUpdated Reviewed by eTunisie editorial team

For a first trip to Tunisia, Hammamet is the safest all-round base; Djerba is best for families with young children; Sousse is best for value and day trips; Tunis is best for culture. Mahdia suits quiet beach holidays and Tozeur is the Sahara gateway.

  • Hammamet: prettiest resort town, 60 min from Tunis airport, strong design hotels — best all-rounder.
  • Djerba: shallowest, warmest sea and 25-minute transfers — best for toddlers and late-season sun.
  • Sousse: cheapest big resort base, UNESCO medina, El Jem and Kairouan within an hour.
  • Tunis: Carthage, the Bardo Museum, Sidi Bou Said and the best food — but only average beaches.
  • Mahdia: the finest sand on the coast and very few crowds; Monastir the quietest all-inclusive strip.
  • Tozeur: oases, salt flats and Star Wars sets — a two- or three-night add-on, not a whole holiday.

Hammamet & Yasmine Hammamet — the safest first choice

An hour from Tunis–Carthage airport, Hammamet has the best balance of anything in the country: a 14 km beach with gentle water, a small jasmine-draped medina, Cap Bon vineyards behind it, and Tunisia's strongest cluster of design and adults-only hotels — La Badira, The Russelior, La Menara. Yasmine Hammamet, 7 km south, is the purpose-built resort zone with big all-inclusives and a marina. Costs: 4★ all-inclusive €65–€110 per person per night; 5★ €120–€220. Book it if: it's your first visit, you're a couple, or you want a resort holiday that still looks like Tunisia.

Sousse & Port El Kantaoui — best value, best day trips

Sousse is a real city of 270,000 with a UNESCO medina and a long gold beach, and it is the cheapest of the major bases. Port El Kantaoui 8 km north is the polished marina zone with the best-kept sand and a golf course. Within an hour: El Jem's Roman amphitheatre, Kairouan's Great Mosque, Monastir and Mahdia. Costs: 4★ all-inclusive €50–€85; Port El Kantaoui 5★ €90–€150. Book it if: you want the most trip for the money, or you plan to sightsee as much as swim.

Djerba — the family beach island

Djerba's eastern shore has the shallowest, warmest and calmest water in Tunisia; small children can wade out 50 metres. Transfers from Djerba–Zarzis airport are 20–35 minutes, the shortest in the country, and the island's spa and thalassotherapy hotels are among the best in North Africa. Off the beach: Houmt Souk market, the Ghriba synagogue, Djerbahood street art, Guellala pottery. Costs: 4★ all-inclusive €60–€100; 5★ €110–€200. Book it if: you have toddlers, you're travelling in October, or you want to combine beach with a Sahara excursion.

Tunis, Sidi Bou Said & Gammarth — the culture base

Stay here for Carthage, the Bardo Museum's mosaics, the UNESCO medina and Sidi Bou Said, which joined the World Heritage List in 2026. The northern suburbs of La Marsa and Gammarth carry the beach clubs, rooftop bars and the country's top city hotels. Beaches are decent rather than dazzling. Costs: medina dars from €60 per room; central 4★ €70–€110; Gammarth luxury from €200. Book it if: you want history, food and nightlife — ideally three nights, then move to the coast.

Monastir, Mahdia and Tozeur — the quieter picks

Monastir (Skanès) is the calmest all-inclusive strip, 10 minutes from Monastir airport and 10–15% cheaper than Sousse, with the Ribat fortress and marina in town. Ideal for a low-effort family week. Mahdia has the best sand in Tunisia — around 20 km of fine, uncrowded beach — plus a beautiful fortified old town on a peninsula. Fewer hotels, far fewer people. Tozeur is the Sahara gateway: palm oases at Chebika and Tamerza, the Chott el Jerid salt flat, and the Star Wars sets at Ong Jemel. Two or three nights as part of a bigger loop, not a week on its own. Costs: Monastir 4★ €45–€80; Mahdia 4★ €55–€95; Tozeur boutique and desert lodges €70–€180 per room.

Quick decision table

• First trip, want everything to work → Hammamet • Toddlers, shallow safe sea, short transfer → Djerba • Tight budget, lots of sightseeing → Sousse • Museums, ruins, restaurants, nightlife → Tunis • Quiet all-inclusive with nothing to organise → Monastir / Skanès • Best beach, fewest crowds → Mahdia • Desert, oases, big landscapes → Tozeur, added to any of the above Two weeks? The most satisfying loop is Tunis (3 nights) → Sousse or Mahdia (4) → Tozeur and the Sahara (3) → Djerba (4), flying home from Djerba.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Tunisia for a first visit?
Hammamet. It is an hour from Tunis–Carthage airport, has a long gentle beach, a pretty medina and the widest range of hotel styles, and it works for couples and families alike. Add two or three nights in Tunis for Carthage and Sidi Bou Said.
Where should families with young children stay in Tunisia?
Djerba's east coast. The water is shallow, calm and the warmest in the country, transfers from the airport are 20–35 minutes, and most hotels are all-inclusive with kids' clubs. Monastir's Skanès strip is the cheaper alternative.
Which part of Tunisia is cheapest?
Sousse and Monastir. Four-star all-inclusive hotels start around €45–€55 per person per night in high season, roughly 10–20% below Hammamet and Djerba, and both drop a further 25–35% in May, June and late September.
Where is the best beach in Tunisia?
Mahdia for sand quality and space — about 20 km of fine, uncrowded beach. Djerba's eastern shore is the best for safe swimming, and Port El Kantaoui near Sousse is the best-maintained resort beach.
Can I combine a beach holiday with the Sahara?
Yes. Two- or three-night 4x4 circuits to Matmata, Tozeur, Chebika and the Douz dunes run from Djerba, Sousse and Hammamet. Djerba is closest, with about 3 hours' drive to the first stop.
