What each place is actually for
Tunis is a city break. You come for the medina's souks and hidden palaces, the Bardo Museum's Roman mosaic collection — the finest in the world — the ruins of Carthage spread along the coastal suburbs, Sidi Bou Said's cliff-top lanes, and a food scene that runs from lablabi counters to serious modern Tunisian restaurants. Add the northern suburbs of La Marsa and Gammarth for beach clubs, rooftop bars and Tunisia's best hotels outside the resorts.
Sousse is a sun holiday. It has a UNESCO medina, a Ribat and a first-rate archaeological museum, so it is not culture-free, but the reason people book it is a long gold beach fronted by good-value all-inclusive hotels, with El Jem, Kairouan, Monastir and Mahdia within an easy drive.
