Djerba or Hammamet — which Tunisia beach should you book?

These are Tunisia's two biggest resort destinations and they attract very different travellers. Hammamet is closer to the airport, has the prettier old town, and works for couples and culture-curious families. Djerba is an island, has the better beaches and the warmest sea, and is built for week-long all-inclusive holidays. Here's how to choose.

Beach quality — Djerba wins

Djerba has Tunisia's best beaches, full stop. The sand on the Sidi Mahres and Aghir strips is fine, white and gently shelving — you can walk 30 metres from shore and still be waist-deep. The water stays warm enough to swim from late April to early November. Hammamet's beaches are good — particularly the long Yasmine Hammamet stretch and the curve of Hammamet bay — but the sand is coarser, occasional seaweed in summer, and the swimming season is shorter (May–October). Hammamet wins on scenery though: the old town's white walls and date palms come right down to the beach, which Djerba doesn't match.

Hotels and price

Both have hundreds of 4★ and 5★ all-inclusive resorts at similar price points (€60–€130/night per person, all-in, in shoulder season). Differences: Hammamet has more variety — more 5★ design hotels (La Badira, The Russelior), more boutique riads in the old medina, more private villas with pools (the Capital Hammamet and Yasmine zones). It's the right choice if you want choice. Djerba is more uniform — almost everything is a beachfront 4★ all-inclusive, often German/Belgian-owned, predictable quality. Hasdrubal Prestige and Radisson Blu Palace are the standout 5★. Best choice if you want one beach hotel for the whole week with no decisions.

Families with kids

Both work well, but for different ages. Hammamet for young families (3–10): Carthageland and Friguia Park (zoo + safari) are 30 minutes away; the medina is small and walkable; pizza, pasta, ice cream everywhere; the airport transfer is short. Most resorts have proper kids' clubs and water parks on-site. Djerba for older kids and teens (10+): bigger resorts, more water sports, the island has flamingo lagoons, the synagogue of La Ghriba, a crocodile farm, and you can rent quads and jet skis. Less to do off-resort than Hammamet, which means more lazy beach days — perfect or boring depending on your kids.

Day trips and exploring

Hammamet wins decisively here. From Hammamet you can day-trip to: • Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said (1h) • Kairouan, Tunisia's holy city and the Great Mosque (1h30) • El Jem Roman amphitheatre (1h45) • Cap Bon coast and Kelibia (1h) • Nabeul pottery souk (15 min) Djerba is an island. Day trips are limited: Matmata troglodyte villages and the Star Wars set at Tataouine (3h drive each way), or a ferry to the mainland. If your idea of a holiday is exploring 2–3 different places, Hammamet wins. If it's one beach for a week, Djerba wins.

Atmosphere, nightlife and the right pick

Hammamet has a livelier evening scene — the Yasmine marina, beach clubs in summer (Calypso, Phebus), the medina cafés, an actual restaurant scene outside the hotels. The crowd skews European, mid-30s to 50s, with kids. Djerba is sleepier, more all-inclusive-bubble, more German/Belgian/Russian. Houmt Souk has charm but evenings outside the resort zone are quiet. Great for couples who want pure rest; less great if you want to go out. Quick decision rule: • First trip to Tunisia, want variety, kids under 10, short stay → Hammamet • Pure beach holiday, want the warmest sea, want to switch off completely, longer stay (10+ nights) → Djerba • Couples seeking design hotels and culture → Hammamet • Couples seeking remote beach and thalassotherapy → Djerba (Hasdrubal)
