Sidi Bou Said

Tunis & the north coast

Mediterranean climate, very similar to Sicily or southern Spain. Summer (Jun–Sep): 28–34°C by day, 22°C nights, sea 24–26°C. Sunny essentially every day. The occasional hot south wind ('chergui') can push temperatures briefly above 38°C. Autumn (Oct–Nov): a perfect 22–28°C, sea still warm enough to swim through October. Winter (Dec–Feb): mild but real — 14–18°C by day, 7–10°C nights. Roughly half of Tunisia's annual rainfall comes Nov–Feb, mostly as short showers, with occasional grey stretches. Spring (Mar–May): the wildflower season. 18–25°C, possible showers in March, drying through April–May.

Hammamet, Sousse, Mahdia & the Sahel

Tunisia's resort coast — slightly drier and hotter than Tunis. May: 24°C days, 16°C nights, sea 19°C — early-season prices. June: 28°C / 19°C, sea 22°C, brilliant. July–August: 32°C / 22°C, sea 26°C — the peak. Hot but not oppressive thanks to a constant sea breeze. September: a near-perfect 29°C / 21°C, sea still 25°C. October: 25°C / 18°C, sea 23°C — locals' favourite month. Winter on the Sahel: 16–18°C days, 8–10°C nights, the occasional rainy weekend. Resorts run skeleton service; real value if you don't need to swim.

The desert south — Tozeur, Douz, Matmata

Hot desert climate — wild day/night swing. April: 27°C / 12°C — perfect. May: 32°C / 16°C. June: 38°C / 22°C — hot but bearable, dry heat. July–August: 42–45°C by day, 27°C at night. Honest answer: too hot for sightseeing in midday. Locals do everything early or late. Doable if you accept the schedule. September: 36°C / 22°C, easing. October: 30°C / 16°C — the start of the magic season. November–February: 18–22°C by day, 5–10°C at night, the IDEAL time. Cold-clear nights for star-watching. March: 24°C / 11°C. Desert rainfall: under 100mm a year. You may go the entire trip without a cloud.

The mountains — Aïn Draham, Le Kef, Téboursouk

Tunisia's north-west uplands are cooler and wetter year-round than the rest of the country. Pine forests, cork oaks, hill towns. Summer: 24–28°C — a relief from coastal humidity. The local domestic-tourist escape. Winter: 6–12°C, occasional snow above 800m. Aïn Draham gets dustings most winters; the brief window when Tunisia has snow is genuinely magical to photograph. If the coast is too hot in August, the north-west is your air-conditioning.

Practical: when, where, what to pack

Best all-rounder months: April, May, September, October — warm, dry, sea swimmable, desert pleasant. Beach trip: June–early October, with September the smart-money pick (warm sea, smaller crowds). Desert trip: October–April, with November and March the prime months. City culture: anytime except July–August (too hot to walk medinas comfortably mid-afternoon). What to pack — generally: layers. Even in summer, evening dinners on terraces can feel cool. In winter, bring a real jumper for desert nights. See our Packing List page for full season-by-season lists.
