Tunis-Carthage International (TUN)

The country's largest and busiest airport, 8 km from downtown Tunis and the gateway for around 60% of all visitors. A clean, single-terminal layout, fast immigration and easy onward transport make it one of the simpler North African arrivals.

Airlines and routes

TUN is the main hub for Tunisair (the national carrier) and Nouvelair, with year-round direct service to Paris (CDG/ORY), London (LGW/LHR), Brussels, Frankfurt, Munich, Geneva, Zurich, Milan, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Vienna, Istanbul, Doha, Dubai, Jeddah, Casablanca, Algiers and most major French regional cities. Air France, Lufthansa, ITA Airways, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Tunisair Express all serve it. For budget options, Transavia (from Paris-Orly, Lyon, Nantes), Volotea (Italy/France) and Nouvelair's discount fares are often the cheapest.

Getting from the airport to your hotel — taxi, Bolt and private transfers

Getting from TUN to where you're going

Taxi: the simplest option. The official rate to central Tunis is around 25–35 TND day, 35–45 TND night (after 9pm). Insist on the meter ('compteur, s'il vous plaît') or use a Bolt — the airport allows ride-hail pickups from the upper level. TGM light rail: 15 minutes' walk from the terminal to La Goulette station, then direct trains to Sidi Bou Said, La Marsa and downtown Tunis. Cheap (around 1 TND) but rarely used by visitors. Hotel transfers: most 4-star and 5-star hotels arrange airport pickup for €25–€45. Private transfer to Hammamet: 90 minutes, €40–€70 by pre-booked car. To Sousse: 2 hours, €70–€100.

On the ground — practical tips

Currency: ATMs are in arrivals (BIAT, BH, Attijari) and give the official rate. Exchange counters are fine for small amounts. Don't change more than €100–€200 at the airport — better rates in town. SIM: Ooredoo and Orange have stalls in arrivals. €10 buys a tourist plan with 20–30 GB data and local calls. Lounges: the Salon Sigma (Priority Pass) is in airside; the Tunisair Tassili Lounge is for business-class and Wanis members. Food: limited landside, slightly better airside. The medina is 25 minutes away — eat in town if you have time. Left luggage: available landside, around 5 TND per bag per day.
