Friguia Park — Tunisia's wildlife day out
Things To Do

Family parks: a day off the beach

Even the most beach-obsessed kids want a break by day five. Tunisia has several genuinely good family attractions — a wildlife park where you watch the cheetahs at feeding time, a Disney-ish theme park on the Hammamet coast, and water parks that beat the resort pool when the temperature passes 35°C.

Friguia Park — the wildlife day out

Halfway between Hammamet and Sousse, Friguia is Tunisia's biggest wildlife park: 36 hectares with around 50 species, including lions, cheetahs, hippos, giraffes, zebras, baboons and a flamingo lake. Designed as a series of African-savanna habitats rather than rows of cages. Daily shows include lion feeding, parrot show, sea-lion show. There's a kids' play area, restaurants, and the option to stay overnight at the on-site bungalow hotel for an extra-immersive visit. Entry: around 35 TND adult, 25 TND child. Allow 4–5 hours. Easy half-day from any central-coast resort.

Carthageland — the theme park

On the edge of Yasmine Hammamet, Carthageland is Tunisia's biggest amusement park — themed around Punic and Roman Carthage with a mix of family rides (Ferris wheel, log flume, carousel, dodgems), a couple of bigger coasters for older kids, an indoor section, daily shows and a small water-park area. It's not Disneyland, but it's well-maintained, clean, and a perfect afternoon for kids 4–12. Combined tickets with the adjacent Acqua Palace water park are good value. Entry: around 30–45 TND. Open daily in summer; check current days off-season.

Aqualand & Acqua Palace — water parks

Two main options on the coast. Aqualand Hammamet (Yasmine Hammamet): a classic family water park — slides, a wave pool, a kids' splash area, a lazy river. Open May to September. Acqua Palace (Yasmine Hammamet): bigger, more recent, with bigger slides for thrill-seeking teens and a generous toddler area. Often combined with Carthageland on a single ticket. Many resort all-inclusives include or sell day passes to the local water park — check before booking. Entry: 35–55 TND adult, 25–40 TND child.

Other family hits

Houmt Souk Lagoon (Djerba): pedal boats, paddleboards, calm water, café terraces — a perfect afternoon with under-8s. Sidi Bou Said & La Marsa: the train from Tunis (TGM line) and the cobbled blue-and-white village is a hit with kids who like climbing things and eating ice cream. Matmata troglodyte houses: kids love the underground rooms — combine with the Star Wars Sidi Driss hotel. Djerba Explore Park: includes a crocodile farm (the largest in the Mediterranean), a heritage village and a lagoon — half-day, near the resort zone. Medinas: surprisingly good for kids 6+ — give them a small budget to spend in the souks and watch them haggle.

Practical notes

Book hotels with a kids' club for under-12s — almost every 4-star+ has one in summer, included in the rate. Most parks are easy by Bolt or hotel taxi. Renting a car for a single day-out (Sixt and Hertz airport-only) is around €40–€60 per day. Water parks are exhausting in 38°C weather — start early (10am opening), break for lunch, leave by 4pm. Always carry water, sunscreen and a backup snack — even at well-equipped parks.
